Writing, Writing, WritingStudents will complete three essays per semester. One larger (major) research essay of 500-800 words using MLA format per semester and two shorter (minor) essays of 300 to 400 words (one per quarter). Students will respond with a thematic analysis, character analysis, or other type of analytical essay that draws from one or more of the titles in the semester utilizing strategies such as comparison/contrast or cause and effect in their analyses to refine and develop their ability to synthesize multiple sources into a concise argument.
Students will also have journal and free writes daily. These will require a short response (usually one to two paragraphs) and will be used to reinforce comprehension and extended analysis of the texts we read and their related topics. Supplemental Reading RequirementsStudents are required to choose one diverse novel and one other novel each quarter. They will also be completing a book report each semester over one of the books they completed DURING that semester.
